Greens Celebrate Success as Labour Drops Threat to St Thomas’s Square Park

Greens and local residents are relieved to hear the news that our Labour Council has finally dropped proposals for the development of seven houses on St Thomas’s Square Play Park, a protected local green space.

St Thomas’s Park is a green space rich in biodiversity, visited daily by local families for the well-resourced play area and by local dog walkers who enjoy the open green space nearby. Greens have supported the understandable concerns of the Friends of St Thomas’s Park since last summer by meeting with key campaigners, representing their views at a local residents’ meeting, making a bid for an Environmental Improvement grant and spreading their campaign message in their local newsletters.

Greens understand that council officers dropped the planned development for purely financial reasons. Jacqueline Whitmore, Coleridge resident and Green Party member says,

“We wish the plans have been axed because the Council and its Coleridge councillors had listened to residents. However, I’m very relieved that Labour have seen sense and dropped the proposals. As local residents we can now feel reassured that our park is safe.”

Sarah Nicmanis, Green candidate for Coleridge Ward, and Green Party parliamentary candidate says,

“I am pleased Labour have abandoned their plans to build over St Thomas’s Park, and that residents can continue to enjoy their park, a protected space which must continue to be truly protected, and not be subjected to intrusive works.”
